Review of Rise of the Turtles:

“The two-part Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series opener is great. It’s fun, fast, and energetic. All the characters have great personalities, each quickly defined and instantly likeable. And, arguably for the first time ever, Michelangelo is hilarious. He has easily two of the biggest laughs in the entire opener. The action is swift and nicely stylized, the animation top-notch. Yes, some of the human character designs look questionable, but overall everything works nicely. Visual gags are pulled off superbly, the story is interesting and true to the extensive history of the characters (blending a bunch of different interpretations), and I’m genuinely interested to see where things will go from here. The Turtle designs even bring unique quirks to each of the young heroes, like Mikey’s more innocent look or Donatello’s missing tooth, matching to their personalities. The two-part opener is perfectly paced, it’s a pure blast from start to finish, and there looks to be hints at ongoing subplots to the first season. With luck I’ll have time to review it more in-depth, but this is a great start to what looks to be a fun, action-packed cartoon.”
